The Youth Say Yes For Change Initiative says majority of
Nigerian youths are behind Sen. Bukola Saraki President of the Nigerian Senate
despite his ordeal. The group in a press statement signed by its National
Coordinator Comrade Nwokoma Messiah and made available to media men wondered
why the President of the Senate has become a subject of attack by the ruling
All Progressive Congress APC which he helped win the last general elections.
The group urged the APC to recollect that the Nigerian
President had given the go ahead for the emergence of the present leadership in
the National Assembly by stating that he is willing to work with anybody that
emerges stressing that such stance must be respected by the party and its hierarchy
no matter what.
The group which described the Senate President as a fine
gentleman whose activities in the senate is worth commending, said the
distraction which the 8th National Assembly is facing is uncalled
for while stressing that the executive arm of government must do well not to be
seen as a clog in the wheel of progress of the 8th National
Assembly. “The Nigerian President had promised not to interfere with the
politics in the National Assembly but it is quite unfortunate that his statements
have become completely out of tune with the reality on ground. This is most
condemnable. What do they want to teach we that are the youths in this country
when their words can no longer be their bonds? As Nigerian youths we must learn
to ensure that we hold our leaders accountable for their promises and we must
not fail to do this patriotic duty.” The statement added.
The group said as much as the principle of separation of
powers is concerned, the Nigerian Parliament must be accorded respect and
allowed to thrive without unnecessary distraction as it is the case today. It
said it will mobilise other groups across the length and breadth of the country
to support the mandate given to the Nigerian Senate President. “We have
concluded plans to synergise with other youth groups across the country in
order to bring the impunity against the Senate and the Senate President to an
end. The fact that majority of the elected Senators are behind him must be
respected” the statement added.
