The Kaduna State House of Assembly
has set up a committee to investigate the non-payment of civil servants’
salaries for months in the state.
In a motion moved by Bello Sani
Gimi, representing Makarfi constituency, he said civil servants in the state
were suffering for months as a result of the non-payment of their entitlements
in the name of biometric verification.
On the verification, he said
civil servants that had spent many years servicing the state government would
end up being called ghost workers.
He stressed that the House was
not against the exercise, but added that, “After verification, those who were
cleared should be paid their wages.”
The house expressed dismay that
some civil servants that were cleared could not be paid after obtaining their
cheques because their names were not included in the banks they were directed
to go.
“As a representative of the
people, it is a thing of great concern for somebody to work for months without
anything to take care of their family. The state government, as a matter of
urgency, should see every reason to pay the civil servants their salaries,” the
legislator said.
After hearing the motion and
concern shown by other legislators, the House unanimously agreed that a
committee be set up to carefully look into the plight of the workers with a
view to ascertaining the real situation.
The house gave the committee two
weeks to report its findings for necessary action on the matter.
It will be recalled that
immediately after El-Rufai-led government came into office, the verification
exercise of the state civil servants commenced to ascertain the real number of
its workforce.
