Members of the Niger
State House of Assembly have expressed displeasure with the “frustratingly
slow” method used by the state governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, in probing
alleged misdeeds of his predecessor, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu’s government,
which they noted was not yielding any immediate result.
The Assembly consequently adopted
the motion sponsored by Mohammed A. Haruna of Bida 11 constituency and seconded
by Isah Mohammed of Labun constituency, directing the governor to immediately
set up commissions of inquiry to “investigate the fraudulent manner” the past
administration conducted the activities of the state in the past eight years.
It called for such inquiry to, as
a matter of urgency, look at the alleged N2.9 billion shared among some public
officers as the immediate past administration winded up and also called for
investigation into the operation of the local government joint account; ward
development projects; various bonds taken by the past government; the 3 Arms
zone project; Minna Airport City project; the 10 kilometre local government
road projects across the 25 councils of the state.
The Niger Assembly went on to
request the probe of projects purportedly embarked upon by the immediate past
government in some educational institutions across the state such as the state
university, former college of education, Minna now university of education;
college of agric, Mokwa; Zugeru Polytechnics and School of Midwifery, Minna and
Tunga Magajiya among others.
It invoked the relevant sections
of the constitution to direct Governor Bello to set up the commission of
inquiry in accordance with section 2 of the Commission of Inquiry Law 1989 of
Niger State to initiate the probe, even as it directed the Clerk to gazette the
resolution in accordance with the requirement of the law and to forward same to
the governor for action.
