A former member
of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Onimole, has attributed the emergence
of ex-Governor Godswill Akpabio as Senate Minority Leader to the need to ensure
federal character by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Baring his mind
to Daily Sun, he stressed that having realised that the South-South zone might
be short changed in the Senate, the party believed it was necessary to carry the zone along in
the Senate heirachy. This, he reasoned
is the ideal thing to do, as it was imperative to ensure that every zone is
accorded its due in national affairs.
Onimole added
that but for this initiative, the South-South would have been left in the cold
regarding the issue. He therefore commended the PDP for doing justice to the
issue, since the zone had virtually lost out in the arrangement put together by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Continuing, the
former lawmaker stressed that this show that PDP has the much needed depth in
terms of democratic ideals.
He added that it
was untrue that Akpabio was not fit to occupy the position by virtue of being a
first timer in the Senate. He stressed
that since PDP zoned the position to the South-South, Akpabio, a two term
governor of Akwa Ibom State was eminently qualified to fill the position.
He also
expressed optimism that the party has a bright future considering recent
experiences.
