The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it was not satisfied with the declaration of results for the Ilaje Constituency I and II House of Assembly election.

The election was held on April 11, 2015 and was marred by irregularities, while the commission declared it results as inconclusive.

But, INEC retraced it steps ‎and later declared Mr. Abayomi Akinruntan and Coker Malachi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) both from Ilaje Constituencies I and II winners of the election, respectively.

Acting Chairman of the Commission, Amina Zakari, who spoke to journalists, on Wednesday, said that the election lacked credibility.

Zakari, who was represented by the former National Electoral Commissioner-in-charge of Ogun, Oyo and Ekiti States, Prof. Lai Olurode, expressed displeasure while commissioning an Official Quarters for the Resident Electoral Commission (REC), in Akure, the state capital.

She explained that the commission was helpless and had to declared winners for the two constituencies.

According to her, since the matter was taken to court the commission had already abided by the outcome and decision of the court.

“I think the decision was taken in the context of certain of development. We are helpless. Once returns have been made, the Commission cannot do otherwise. It is only a court of law that can reverse it.

“We were not satisfied with the conduct of that election. I think the matter is in the court and I don’t want to sound prejudicial,” she said.

The INEC boss, however, cautioned the staff of the commission against compromising with politicians as the electioneering period for the next year governorship election approached.

She disclosed that the commission decided to build the official quarters for the REC so as to avoid unnecessary influence from rich politicians before and during the election
