The Lagos State House of Assembly
says the surge in cases of noise pollution in the state must stop.
The Assembly, through a motion by
a lawmaker, Abiodun Tobun, which was supported by other members of the House,
urged relevant government agencies to regulate noise pollution.
Tobun had earlier stated that
Section 9(a) of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency Law, 1996,
prescribed acceptable standards to control “pollution level of water, air,
noise and land in consonance with the Federal Government guidelines, policies
and criteria on the environment”.
He said, “The high level of noise
pollution arising from the blaring of music by vendors, religious
organisations, street party organisers and outdoor advertisers, among others,
needs to be regulated.”
Another lawmaker, Bayo Osinowo,
said the Ministry of Information and Strategy should embark on public enlightenment
campaigns to sensitise the people to dangers of noise pollution to health.
The members expressed worry that
there was no proper enforcement, presently aimed at controlling noise pollution
in Lagos.
A member of the House, Sanai
Agunbiade, suggested the need to enlighten religious organisations and
discourage the use of public address systems outside the confines of their
buildings in any manner that disturbed the peace of the community.
The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa,
subsequently directed the clerk to convey the resolution of the House to
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to direct the General Manager of the Lagos State
Environmental Protection Agency to discharge its statutory responsibility.
