
The Speaker of the Lagos State
House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has sent a congratulatory message
to the newly elected National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists
(NUJ), Alhaji Waheed Odusile, on his success at the polls.
Obasa, while reacting to the NUJ
National Delegates election result in a statement in Lagos, also felicitated
with Nigerian journalists on the peaceful and successful conduct of the
election.
“Congratulation my brother for
your success at the polls and I am particularly pleased that your election came
through a peaceful democratic process, I am really happy not only for you but
also for the entire body of journalists in Nigeria,” the Speaker said.
He described the peaceful
election conducted by the NUJ as a clear indication that Nigerian journalists
have real democratic instincts in them which is worthy of emulation.
“The peaceful conduct of the NUJ
election is also a clear indication that Nigerian journalists are determined to
walk the talk, practising the ideal they preach daily through their writings,
and presentation on air. The global wish has always been the conduct of
peaceful democratic elections without rancour and devoid of chaos. This is what
Nigerian journalists have just done and I want to especially commend them for
this lofty achievement. Indeed, your conduct is worthy of emulation,” Speaker
Obasa said.
The Lagos Assembly Speaker also
called on those who lost out in the election to cooperate and work together
with the new executives to move the journalism profession forward in the
country.
“In every contest, there is
always a winner and a loser which is the case in this particular contest. The
election is over, what is left is for all hands to be on deck to ensure that
the Waheed Odusile led administration succeed in its resolve to move the
journalism profession forward in the country. The goal should be continuous
improvement of the profession and advancement in the welfare of its practitioners,”
he said.
While wishing the Waheed Odusile
led executive council of the NUJ a successful tenure in office, the Speaker,
called on journalists in Nigeria to support government at all levels in
ensuring the success of the country’s democratic process.
“The sterling roles you have been playing in
promoting positive democratic ideals in the country are well noted and
documented but you should not rest on your oars in promoting these ideals.
“Once again, I congratulate the
new NUJ President, Waheed Odusile, and I congratulate all journalists in
Nigeria on this successful and peaceful democratic process,” Obasa said.
