Law makers in the Nigerian Parliament have come out to
condemn what they call the illegal arrest of the former Chief Security Officer
to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The lawmakers who craved anonymity considering the security
implication of the matter said it is imperative that the Mr. Godwin Obuah the
ex CSO is released in order not to send wrong signals to our friends in the
international community. They condemned the action which is coming in the heels
of the President’s visit to the United States of America; a country that is
considered the flagship of the world’s democracy and human rights.
The Lawmakers said considering that the former National
Security Adviser was arrested and released following hues and cries, it will
not do the image of the present administration any good if other persons linked
to the former President are arrested without recourse to legal and legitimate
mechanisms.
The lawmakers demanded the immediate release of Mr. Obuah in
order to save the face of the Nigerian government.
They promised to ensure that they bring it to the attention
of both Chambers of the National Assembly as matters of urgent public
importance as soon as they resume stressing that the National Assembly owe it
as a duty to checkmate the excesses of the executive if it wants to keep our
human rights record in line with internationally expected standards. Something they
all agred the former administration did well to protect.
"We will not fail to draw the attention of both
chambers of the National Assembly to this ignoble course of trampling on the
rights of individuals in this country due to the overzealousness of security
officials. If they have anything against these Nigerian citizens they know the
best way to go about it rather than employing this gestapo style which is
atavistic in its entirety" one of the parliamentarians whom Parliamentary
Info sought his view stressed.
Meanwhile as we report, the former CSO is yet to see his
doctor, lawyer or any member of his family neither has he been able to take his
medications as his family members continue to appeal for his release which they
said must be effected in order for his diabetic condition not to get to crisis
level.
All attempts to reach the National Human Rights Commission
has failed as no reply has been made to our text messages neither has our calls
been replied to.
