The Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday said the alleged
forgery of the Senate Standing Order 2015 was a plot by the governing All
Progressives Congress to rubbish the leadership of the Senate.
The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Olisa Metuh,
who made the claim in an interview with a SUNDAY PUNCH correspondent, said the
governing party was after the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, and his
deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, as the APC was not comfortable with their
leadership of the Red Chamber.
He said, “Our position is that there is no scandal; there is
no forgery; there is nothing. It is trumped-up, cooked-up charge just to
rubbish the leadership of the Senate.
“The fact that we have the Deputy President of the Senate and
the fact that the President of the Senate is not the candidate of the All
Progressives Congress, they want to rubbish the leadership of the Senate.
“For us in the PDP, we believe there is a limit to
lawlessness. There is no way the government, as presently constituted, can make
witch-hunt as a policy, as a policy thrust. In two months we have not seen
anything; we have not seen the direction of the government, its programmes and
policy direction. The only thing they are reeling out is witch-hunts”.
According to Metuh, the activities of the APC had shown that
it planned to break the country.
The opposition party spokesman insisted that senators should
be left alone to handle their affairs just as he stressed the need for them to
be allowed to enjoy their ‘legislative immunity’.
He said if the governing party keeps meddling in the internal
affairs of the legislature, the implication was that lawmakers could be
arrested for sponsoring bills termed to be offensive.
“The moment the Police starts getting involved in the rules
and procedures of the Senate, it means the legislature has lost its independence”,
he added.
“We understand that they want to arrest the Senate President
and the Deputy Senate President. We are daring them to try it. If they want to
end democracy, they should say it. We also warn them that Nigeria will continue
to remain one. The PDP is insisting that Nigeria will remain one and we will do
anything for the country to remain one”, he added.
