The Sokoto State Government civil servants who are residing
in Yauri flats and Bado quarters in the Sokoto metropolis on Tuesday petitioned
the state House of Assembly over the high cost of the houses recently sold to
them by the immediate past administration.
Lodging their complaints before the members of the Assembly
yesterday, the leader of the aggrieved workers, Malam Sama’ila Illo, decried
that the residents of the Yauri flats were asked to pay N2.3 million for each
house, while those of Bado quarters were asked to pay N5 million.
According to him, the government asked them to pay the cost
of the houses within only one month, apart from the payment of a N50,000
non-refundable fee.
‘’The cost of these houses is outrageous and we are pleading
with the assembly to assist and review it downward, as well as extend the
deadline for the payment to a more reasonable and affordable period,’’ Illo
pleaded.
Illo further lamented all the available spaces which were
serving as playgrounds, parking spaces and refuse dumping sites, among others,
had been allocated to other people who are not tenants at the quarters.
Responding, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly,
Alhaji Salihu Maidaji, commended the aggrieved workers for not taking the law
into their hands.
He promised to set up a committee to look into the petition,
with a view to addressing the issue.
“I will set up an ad hoc committee within the next two days
to look into your petition and do justice to it.’’ We will surely do justice to
your complaint with a view to getting respite for you.
“In fact, the members of the committee will visit the two
quarters, conduct an assessment with a view to making the necessary
recommendations,” he added.
