The Director-General of the Department for State Services
(DSS) Lawal Daura may appear before the Senate today over alleged interference
on the Rivers State Election Tribunal.
Daura’s invitation was due to a petition by 31 members of
Rivers State House of Assembly.
The Rivers lawmakers in the petition alleged the DSS had
arrested some officials of the Independent National Election Commission (INEC)
and members of the Election Petition Tribunal and subjected them to serious
intimidation, harassment and coercion to compromise the judicial independence
of the tribunal and pervert the cause of justice.
Daura is to appear before the Senate Ethics and Privileges
committee which is conducting investigation on the matter today.
Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assemblyý, Ikuinyi-Owaji
Ibani, led other members of the House to the committee.
Chairman of the senate ethics committee Samuel Anyanwu said
ýthe senate would want prompt response to invitations and questions raised
during the investigation.
