FOLLOWING the state government’s termination of its contract
for the construction of a section of the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway, the Ebonyi
State House of Assembly has ordered the Chinese Civil and Engineering
Construction Company (CCECC) to refund about N600 million to the government
with immediate effect.
The resolution was made yesterday after the Humphrey
Nwurukwu-led House ad hoc committee that investigated the state of the road
presented its report, which indicated that the level of work done was not
commensurate with the money spent on the project so far.
The road, which extends from the Ebonyi State University
(EBSU) permanent site to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat, spans
about 5.7km and was earlier awarded to SETRACO by the Federal Government,
before ex-governor Martins Elechi re-awarded a section of it to CCECC for
dualisation.
